# urlaub-smart.de > Free vacation planner for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Enter your region and your number of vacation days; the planner shows which days to book so that public holidays and weekends turn into the longest possible breaks. Every region page lists the public holidays, school holidays and the best "Brückentage" (bridge days) of the year as data tables. Data source: OpenHolidaysAPI. Made by Marcel Wagner (https://marcel-wagner.dev/). ## How the planner works - Every possible block of consecutive vacation days is expanded over adjacent weekends and public holidays. A classic bridge day is 1 vacation day → 4 days off (factor 4). - The yearly plan maximises the days off in a row within the vacation account: bridge days and holiday clusters plus plain whole weeks. A plain week is worth the same anywhere, so those weeks are shown as freely placeable. - The reference for "more days off" is the same number of vacation days taken as whole working weeks: 30 days as six plain weeks give 54 days off, 25 days give 45. - The vacation year is the calendar year: vacation days of the following year are never counted in a plan. A block over New Year that needs days from the next account is shown separately as a tip for the turn of the year, with the days split per account. - Company closures (Betriebsferien) are annual leave the employer schedules: their working days come off the vacation account by default. Only when the employer gives them on top are they treated as extra days off. - Work models: a weekday mask covers full time and a 4-day week, and a rolling shift rotation (e.g. 4 days on / 2 off) replaces it entirely. Shift workers have fewer working days, so the same vacation account buys more calendar days off. ## School holidays and childcare - School holidays run to roughly 60 working days a year in a German state; a full vacation account holds 30. - A care day (a school-holiday day that falls on a working day) always costs exactly one vacation day. No bridge day helps, because it is a working day by definition. - A day the family spends together costs two vacation days and covers one care day. - Every region page states the childcare gap for that region and year under one stated assumption: both parents have 30 vacation days each (25 in Austria and Switzerland) and spend two weeks of them together.
